Alas... Democracy... Alas!!!

If I remember it correctly, the underlying principles of a democracy is that a representative elected from the people would be serving the people - which is the majority? I just wonder why these days people are resigning to the fact that politicans are serving the rich minority, and all of us should suck it up on the guise that is only a token benefits to the huge majority - as acceptable?
