Songkhran on a Hindsight

As I'm writing this blog technically on the first Day of our Thai New Year - Songkhran, I've decided that I want to reflect on a few issues and remind our readers on a few things before they think about going all out and enjoy themselves.

First of all, this year's drought has been the worst in decades. As a result of that, the lives of numerous farming families have severely been affected. Due to that, before going out splashing excessive amounts of water just for enjoyment, I do want to remind all of us about the farmers and their plight and conserve water if possible.

The second issue that has been troubling me is the massive exodus of holiday seekers going to exotic destinations or simply back home at this period. I was wondering how much energy could be saved if people actually had the choice actually travel during other periods of the year? As the massive exodus from Bangkok starts, we can notice that the huge traffic jam that accumulates from choke points from the main highways resulting to huge lost of money on fuel and transportation cost due to ineffiency usage.

The last issue that really troubles me is the amount of alcohol consumed by this country. To compound that, it just makes me wonder the lack of restraints from the drinkers especially when it comes with drunk driving. It seems alot of drivers show little restraint, and many of the designated drivers actually grab many a drink especially during the holidays. This adds significantly to the carnage and the excessive amount of road accidents during this period.

Oh well, after all of this, I just want to wish all of us a Happy Songkhran holiday :P
